18 Aug 2011 - Earthquake survivors come home to Halley & Nomad Modular
An innovative new design and construction technique developed by Halley Homes and Carter Holt Harvey has helped put Halley Homes and Nomad Modular in a prime position to supply temporary transitional emergency houses for Japanese earthquake survivors left homeless by the March quake.
Evolving a Panelised Building Solution that allows for easy transport and simple erection, the team created a new cabin design that will utilise locally available materials when being constructed in Japan. The panels are shipped flat, and on site the panels can be assembled and locked into place by three people in under three hours. Windows and roofing can be added in just a few more hours, so that the entire cabin can be completed to lock-up in less than one day.
A prototype has proven that the concept works, and with the backing of the Australian government, negotiations for the ongoing supply of these innovative units to some of the worst affected areas of Japan is under way.
